N8 RATHCORMAC/FERMOY BYPASS COMPLETED AHEAD OF SCHEDULE/LIMERICK TUNNEL PROJECT

The Austrian construction company STRABAG and associated companies of the Direct Route Consortium successfully completed one of Ireland’s decisive PPP-Roads projects. The Fermoy bypass comprises 17.5 km of motorway and involved the construction of three interchanges. It also includes a 450 m long viaduct spanning the Blackwater Valley. In addition a further 18 structures were constructed (comprising 7 overbridges, 2 underbridges, 1 service tunnel at the toll plaza, 4 river bridges and 4 underpasses) along with local road realignments.


STRABAG are currently facing the biggest infrastructural challenge in the second phase of the Limerick Southern ring road. The project consists of the construction of approximately 10.0 km of dual carriageway (the M7 Motorway) with grade separated intersections and includes the 675m long Limerick tunnel under the River Shannon Southwest of the City of Limerick. The complex project is a feat of Austrian engineering and will be the second-ever river tunnel built in Ireland. Three fly-overs and eight underpasses will also be constructed until completion in 2009. The street connects the N20 Cork/Tralee Road with the N18 Ennis Road. The successful project was completed in October 2006, eight months ahead of schedule. It removes approx. 25,000 vehicles daily from Limerick city.
Preparations are underway for two other major tenders in Ireland, in which STRABAG will also take part.
